Skinreel.com is a DVD download site which offers unlimited access to over 225 titles currently. Each time I review a DVD download site, I feel like I'm waiting for one to really stick out from the crowd because they're all so similar, but unfortunately Skin Reel is not going to be that break through site that steps up to compete with the big boys of the category, or at least not yet. For those not familiar with the concept, essentially these sites allow members to download full DVD titles for one flat rat per month, and the best part is that the videos are yours to keep forever!
The first thing I checked out at Skin Reel was the update schedule. They claim on the tour that new titles are added three times per week, but in the new releases section, there was only one movie listed from several days before I visited the site. I thought perhaps it was only meant to display the single most recent update, but the plural "releases" makes me think otherwise. It's possible that the site does update as stated, but I'd feel a lot more confident about it if there were more evidence of it. Each title shows the release date, but there's no way to view them in order by date, and manually searching the site for releases from certain days is obviously not possible.
You can browse the collection at skinreel by category, studio, and porn star name, and you can also search titles and porn star names. The title search also includes the brief description given of each DVD, so if you type in "lingerie" for example, you'll not only get DVDs where the world "lingerie" is used in the title, you'll also be shown the ones which mention lingerie in the description which should help you find what you're looking for.
The actual downloads at Skin Reel are done by scene. There is no full length download with the entire DVD, so you'll have to get each scene separately. Most similar sites work this way, so that's pretty standard. Your format options include MPEG and WMV which come in two quality levels each, or a DVD quality DivX file that works perfectly for full screen viewing. You may notice some variation in the quality, but that's down to the quality of the original recording for the most part and really can't be helped much.
Perhaps the biggest selling point of skinreel.com is the price, which is considerably less than most sites that offer a lot less. About $9 for 30 days gets you access to everything they have, including the DVD resolution DivX versions, which gives them one point over the biggest and best in the category, videobox.com, which charges extra to upgrade to DVD resolution. On the other hand, it also offers almost 10 times as many DVDs and updates five times per day, as opposed to skinreel.com's alleged three times weekly. |
